NTC thermistor (Negative Temperature Coefficient thermistor) is a temperature‑sensitive semiconductor resistor with negative temperature characteristics. Its resistance value decreases significantly as temperature rises. Featuring high sensitivity, fast response and low cost, it is widely used for temperature detection, temperature compensation, circuit power calibration and ambient temperature monitoring in electronic systems.

Working Principle

NTC thermistor is made of composite ceramic semiconductor materials. At low temperature, the internal carrier concentration is low, resulting in high resistance. As temperature increases, thermal excitation generates a large number of electrons and holes, greatly improving material conductivity and reducing resistance. The resistance‑temperature correspondence is stable and predictable, enabling accurate temperature sampling through voltage division detection.

Main Classification

According to packaging types, NTC includes bead leaded type, glass‑sealed high‑precision type and SMD chip type. Classified by application, it is divided into temperature measuring type, temperature compensation type and inrush current limiting type. Different B‑value grades cover low‑sensitivity general scenarios and high‑precision precision measurement scenarios.

Key Electrical Parameters

25°C nominal resistance (R25) is the basic resistance parameter. B‑value determines temperature sensitivity and linearity range. Tolerance grade defines temperature measurement accuracy. Maximum power rating limits safe working load. Thermal time constant reflects temperature response speed. Operating temperature range and stability grade ensure long‑term reliability.

Circuit Design Guidelines

Match fixed precision divider resistor to form stable temperature sampling circuit. Avoid excessive loop current to prevent self‑heating and detection deviation. Select high B‑value and tight tolerance models for precision temperature monitoring. Apply NTC compensation circuit for drift‑sensitive analog modules. Reserve power derating margin for long‑term continuous operation.

PCB Layout Suggestions

Place NTC close to heat sources that need temperature monitoring. Keep sensing traces short and clean to minimize noise coupling. Isolate sampling signal traces from high‑power switching loops. Avoid placing NTC near irrelevant heating components to prevent false temperature drift. Standardize pad layout to ensure stable thermal conduction and soldering quality.

Common Failure Modes

Excessive loop current causes self‑heating and permanent parameter drift. Long‑term high‑temperature aging leads to B‑value deviation and inaccurate sampling. Humidity and oxidation induce unstable resistance values. Thermal cycling stress causes internal material fatigue and sensitivity attenuation. Improper layout results in delayed or distorted temperature detection.

Market Application Trend

Miniature SMD NTC thermistors are widely adopted in portable smart devices and battery temperature monitoring systems. High‑precision low‑drift NTC models improve accuracy of industrial and automotive temperature acquisition. Integrated thermistor sensing modules simplify peripheral circuit design. Ultra‑fast response NTC products meet high‑speed thermal protection demands of high‑power modules.
